We have taken clients through Rajasthan in every month of the year. This is the honest advice we give them before they book — not the standard travel-site copy.
We get this question every single day. And the honest answer is: it depends on what you want. We have sent families to Rajasthan in May and had them come back saying it was the best holiday of their lives. We have sent couples in December who complained that Jaisalmer was too crowded to enjoy. The season alone does not make the trip.
That said, there are real practical differences between months. After years of running private tours across the state, here is what we actually tell our clients before they book.
The Short Answer
- October to February: the safest bet — good weather for every destination
- November: our personal favourite month — festivals, great light, not yet peak crowds
- December–January: the most beautiful but also the most expensive and crowded
- February–March: the sweet spot most people overlook — same great weather, fewer people
- April–June: brutal heat, but the only time tigers come into the open at Ranthambore
- July–September: monsoon Rajasthan is genuinely stunning and 30–40% cheaper — most tourists miss this
Month by Month — What It Is Actually Like
October: Our Favourite Month to Book
If someone calls us and says they are flexible on dates, we say October without hesitation. The monsoon ends in late September and October Rajasthan is almost magical — still slightly green, temperatures around 28–32°C in the day, cool evenings. The crowds have not arrived yet. Hotels have availability. You can walk through Amber Fort without being shoulder to shoulder with tour groups.
We took a family of five to Jaisalmer in October last year. They had the Sam Sand Dunes almost entirely to themselves for the sunset. That does not happen in December.
November: Festival Season
November is when the Pushkar Camel Fair happens — usually in the third week. If you are planning to visit Pushkar, build your entire trip around this. It is chaotic, colourful, and completely unlike anything else in India. About 200,000 people descend on a town built for 20,000. You will need to book accommodation 2 to 3 months in advance. We book out completely during Pushkar Fair week.
If you are visiting during Pushkar Fair, do not drive yourself. The roads into Pushkar are blocked for hours on the main fair days. Let us arrange a local driver who knows the back routes in.
December–January: The Beautiful but Expensive Months
This is when Rajasthan looks its best. Days are cool and clear (15–22°C), the light is perfect for photographs, and you can sit outside for dinner comfortably. Nights in Jaisalmer drop to 3–5°C in January — pack a proper jacket if you are going to a desert camp.
The trade-off: hotel rates double or triple compared to October. Amber Fort has queues. The popular heritage havelis in Jaisalmer get booked up completely. We always tell clients that if you are booking December in Rajasthan, confirm everything at least 6 to 8 weeks early or you will be left with whatever is remaining.
February–March: The Month People Underestimate
February is genuinely one of the best months and most people do not realise it. The weather is still excellent — warm days, comfortable evenings. Holi falls in late February or March and celebrating it in Jaipur is a serious experience. The old city turns into a colour festival. If you have children who have never seen Holi, bring them to Jaipur for it.
Prices are also noticeably lower than December. We can usually get our clients significantly better rooms for the same budget in February compared to peak season.
April–June: Hot, But Do Not Rule It Out
We will not pretend it is not hot. In May, Jaisalmer regularly hits 44–46°C. You are not walking around at 2pm. But here is what most travel sites do not tell you: this is the only time to see tigers at Ranthambore with any real reliability. The water sources dry up, the forest thins out, and tigers come to the remaining lakes. In April and May, we routinely get clients two or three tiger sightings in a single safari.
If someone says they want tigers AND desert AND forts, we plan their Ranthambore safari for April, then move them to Jaipur and Jodhpur with the itinerary built around early morning and evening sightseeing. It works.
July–September: The Monsoon Surprise
Rajasthan in the monsoon is a genuinely beautiful place that 90% of tourists never see. The desert turns green. Udaipur’s lakes fill completely and the reflections of the City Palace in the water are extraordinary. The Aravalli hills around Ajmer and Pushkar become lush. Roads are mostly fine — unlike Kerala or Assam, Rajasthan does not get the kind of rain that closes things down.
Ranthambore closes in July. Jaisalmer dune safaris are not ideal in the rain. But Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Pushkar — all excellent in the monsoon. And rates are 30 to 40% lower than peak season.
Best Time by Destination
- Jaipur: October to March is ideal. February for Holi.
- Jaisalmer: November to February for the desert experience. Avoid June–September.
- Udaipur: September to March. October is stunning — lakes just filled from the monsoon.
- Ranthambore: October to June for wildlife. April–May for the best tiger sightings. Closed July–September.
- Pushkar: October to March. Third week of November for the Camel Fair.
- Jodhpur: October to February. The blue city in winter morning light is exceptional.
- Bikaner: November to February. Camel Festival is held every January.
Our Genuine Advice
Do not obsess too much over the ‘perfect’ month. We have run successful, memorable trips in every season. The bigger factors are your itinerary, your pace, and your accommodation. A well-planned June trip beats a poorly planned November trip every time.
